Is CBD effective against Lyme disease?

Lyme disease, which is transmitted by ticks, is on the rise. Difficult to diagnose, this disease causes a wide variety of symptoms: joint pain, cardiac or neurological conditions, etc. Many of these symptoms can be alleviated with CBD.
What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium of the genus Borrelia and is transmitted tick bites. Initially dormant and often difficult to detect, it develops over time into serious conditions.
If not treated in the early stages with antibiotics, it can lead to chronic illnesses such as increased fatigue, joint and muscle pain, and neurological conditions such as paralysis and encephalitis. When people develop these very painful and debilitating conditions years after infection, it is often too late to use traditional treatments. This is why many Lyme disease patients have turned to CBD to ease their suffering and improve their quality of life. Cannabinoids are known for their anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving action.
So, can Lyme disease be treated with cannabis?
The antibacterial effect of CBD
CBD was first used in medicine to combat Lyme disease because of its antibacterial properties. Dr Ernie Murakami, from the Centre for Lyme Research in British Columbia, has conducted several studies demonstrating that CBD can significantly reduce the presence of spirochetes, the family to which the borrelia bacteria belong, in the body. Unfortunately, there are still few studies on the role of cannabinoids in limiting the presence of pathogenic bacteria in the body, and they are not comprehensive.
At the moment, it seems that CBD can be used to fight certain bacteria but we are still a long way from being able to use cannabinoids as a treatment for Lyme disease. However, it is clear that CBD is completely appropriate and very effective in relieving the symptoms of patients with this condition.
CBD and the symptoms of Lyme disease
One of the main problems with Lyme disease is that its symptoms take many different forms and can be confused with other conditions: osteoarthritis, intense fatigue, sleep disturbances, neuralgia... However, all these symptoms have one thing in common: many of those suffering have recognised that CBD is very useful for alleviating their suffering, whatever its origin. This finding has been further supported by numerous medical studies. CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties are therefore very useful for relieving joint conditions.
Cannabinoids are also known to have an analgesic effect and can therefore help Lyme disease patients who often suffer from diffuse pain. Finally, having a chronic illness often comes with stress and even depression, which exacerbate the symptoms experienced. Consuming CBD helps to restore a sense of serenity and well-being.
While cannabis cannot be considered a treatment for Lyme disease, it does complement conventional antibiotics effectively to relieve symptoms. Especially as there are different forms of CBD (CBD oil, CBD flowers, e-liquids, capsules, etc.) which come in different concentrations. Therefore, everyone can test and choose the method of consumption and cannabinoid quantity that best suits them in order to effectively combat the symptoms of Lyme disease and ensure a better quality of life on a day-to-day basis.
