CBD and osteoarthritis

Do you suffer from osteoarthritis, and does it significantly impact your daily quality of life? CBD offers new options! Unlike conventional or exclusively symptom-based treatments, taking cannabidiol can allow you to experience its 100% natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. This compound comes from hemp plants. CBD does not cause psychoactive effects, and can relieve joint pain in osteoarthritis without any unwanted side effects. Is CBD effective in osteoarthritis? Which type of CBD should be used for joint pain? We’ll answer all your questions in this article!
What causes osteoarthritis?
Definition
Incapacitating chronic pain, daily discomfort, difficulty performing many movements. Unfortunately, osteoarthritis is a common disease which greatly impacts the quality of life of those affected. Due to the progressive deterioration of cartilage at the ends of bones, joint movements create friction. The more the cartilage deteriorates, the more pain people experience due to the contact between two bones. The issue is that this deterioration affects all cartilage structures and it is irreversible. The pain can be moderate and chronic, or even acute and short-lived.
Causes
Osteoarthritis affects nearly 10 million people in France. The causes of this disease are numerous and varied:
- being overweight or participating in intense activity over a long period of time resulting in excessive pressure on joints;
- age (80% of over 80s are affected);
- joint conditions (chondrocalcinosis, osteonecrosis, and rheumatoid arthritis);
- natural fragility in cartilage;
- anatomic anomalies;
- after-effects of bone and joint trauma;
- heredity (particularly for osteoarthritis in the hands).
The issue with conventional treatments (analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, or corticosteroid infiltration) is that they produce uncomfortable or significant side effects. It is in this respect that CBD plays a role in osteoarthritis, acting as an alternative solution and natural supplement to relieve pain without causing any side effects.
What affect does CBD have on osteoarthritis?
CBD would be very effective at combatting chronic, rheumatic, inflammatory, and joint pain. This natural compound works in 2 ways to soothe inflammation and relieve pain. It acts directly on joint pain (whether in the knees, fingers, or wrists) and on the central nervous system. By binding with certain key receptors, CBD affects the stimulation of nerves or cells which cause pain. This reduces pain by inhibiting signals. The benefit of using CBD in arthritis is that it does not cause any (or very few) side effects, unlike conventional medicines. Therefore, you can consume it in the long term, for long periods of time, without any risk.
Why take CBD for arthritis and osteoarthritis?
Anti-inflammatory effect
The first advantage of using CBD for osteoarthritis is its anti-inflammatory properties. Cannabidiol contributes to reducing pain and swelling by regulating inflammation via the body’s endocannabinoid system. Inflammation is one the main causes of joint pain. You can experience an instant effect if taken sublingually, or benefit from longer-lasting relief with topical application.
Pain relief
CBD can be used to relieve arthritic pain, by reducing inflammation and swelling in affected areas. Thanks to better pain management related to swelling or morning stiffness, patients can be more active and keep moving, whether in physical or social activities. And you shouldn’t underestimate the psychological component in the treatment of joint pain! When CBD is used in osteoarthritis, it can also reduce the intensity of pain felt during aggressive episodes.
Analgesic action
Cannabidiol is known for its analgesic properties. It can supplement some prescribed pain relief medicines, enabling you to reduce the dose and relieve the symptoms of arthritis such as joint and muscle stiffness and sensitivity. Scientific studies are currently looking into whether CBD could be more effective than acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil)!
Improved sleep
All of the advantages mentioned above contribute to CBD’s soothing action to improve quality of life and well-being, particularly due to an improved quality of sleep. Nighttime pain is reduced for better sleep, improved mood, increased energy, and better stress management on a daily basis.
How should you take CBD for joint pain?
CBD percentage
If you want to take CBD for osteoarthritis, we recommend that you use a product that has a high cannabidiol concentration, with a CBD percentage of 20%. As CBD is widely taken to relieve join pain, you’ll need and want quick relief. However, depending on your sensitivity, you can choose a higher or lower percentage! Don’t hesitate to try several products to find the one most suitable for you.
The right dose
It’s impossible to provide an exact dose of CBD for osteoarthritis as dosage will depend on a number of factors (age, weight, height, sensitivity, symptoms, etc). This is essential for achieving the desired effects and relief. We recommend that you start with weak concentrations and progressively increase until you find the right dose. On average, we recommend taking between 1 and 6 mg of CBD per 5 kilos, once or twice daily. For example, one drop of 5% CBD oil contains 2.5 mg of CBD. So, someone weighing 65 kilos would take 5 drops twice daily before adjusting the dose, depending on their body’s reaction.
Method of administration
There are several ways that you can take CBD for osteoarthritis, including orally, sublingually, via cutaneous application, or CBD infusions. CBD oil is the most common option for joint pain, but, again, it all depends on your preferences. However, you must place a lot of importance on the quality of the CBD used in your product to guarantee your safety and health. At The CBD Farm, our CBD is organic and does not include any chemical additives or pesticides. We comply with all French and European legislation, so you can buy products from our online store with your eyes closed!
Should you use CBD cream or oil for osteoarthritis?
People who suffer with arthritis and osteoarthritis often can’t decide between CBD cosmetics and cannabidiol oils. They are both effective methods of relieving pain. When you apply a cream using massaging techniques, the mechanical action increases localised blood flow and relieves pain. CBD slowly enters your blood stream via the skin. So, you can apply the product directly onto the painful area for a more targeted action. With CBD oil, the effects will be felt throughout the body. Depending on the level of pain, you can combine 2 methods of administration!
Can you become dependent on CBD?
No, there’s no risk of becoming dependent! If you consume products with less than 0.3% THC (as stipulated by law) correctly, you will not develop an addiction or dependence to CBD. This compound does not cause any psychotropic effects. It’s only its cousin, THC, which is responsible for this, hence its prohibition in legal CBD products. On the other hand, cannabidiol help to combat addictions! This compound can’t cause dependency as it does not affect dopamine levels.
Taking CBD for joint disorders: what precautions should you take?
CBD for joint pain should not act as a complete replacement for treatment, but more as a supplement for conventional medicines. Don’t hesitate to contact your doctor to discuss taking CBD and to confirm that there are no drug interactions if you are currently taking another treatment. To try CBD for osteoarthritis safely, here are several rules to follow:
- CBD must form part of the complete pain management plan, combined with physical activity and psychological monitoring if possible;
- the end products must contain less than 0.3% THC to be legally sold and consumed in France;
- although the risk of an overdose is low, always start with a weak dose;
- buy your CBD from professional vendors as the quality of the end product will make a big difference to the benefits you feel;
- CBD is contraindicated in people with a history of psychotic disorders, acute liver or kidney disorders, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and children under 18.
