CBD and tinnitus

Suffering from tinnitus has a major impact on quality of life: every day, people are bothered by a particularly unpleasant ringing sensation in their ears. This hearing condition affects millions of people worldwide, yet there is no definitive cure or effective medical treatment to get rid of it. Many patients are now turning to an alternative solution: cannabidiol (CBD). The use of CBD for tinnitus not only provides lasting relief from symptoms, but also treats the cause for long-term relief. How does it work? We explain everything in this article!
What is tinnitus?
Definition
Tinnitus is the term used to describe noises perceived by the ear, which may be more or less acute, continuous, or infrequent. This hearing condition affects many people in France. Tinnitus may appear and disappear spontaneously. It is usually characterised by ringing in the ears, whistling, or other annoying and unpleasant noises. It is particularly noticeable when it is quiet, which can make it difficult to sleep or concentrate. Tinnitus has a direct impact on everyday comfort, especially if it affects both ears at the same time.
Causes
Before we talk about CBD and tinnitus, let’s take a moment to review the causes of tinnitus:
- Damage to the inner or middle ear: this is caused by an excessive amount of pressure (e.g. during a plane journey or scuba diving), excessively loud music, or the deafening noise of an electrical appliance. The most severe side effects can lead to hearing loss.
- Health conditions: tinnitus can also be caused by stress, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a tumour on the auditory nerve, sinusitis or cardiovascular disease.
Can we treat ourselves?
The reason that the use of CBD for tinnitus has gained so much momentum in recent years is that, unfortunately, there are no satisfactory medical treatments for tinnitus. There are only treatments and remedies to reduce the symptoms and negative impacts on everyday comfort. Our main aim is to focus on treating the causes of the disorder and reducing the symptoms through therapy or relaxation exercises. However, medical cannabis provides hope to patients learning to live with tinnitus: the use of CBD for tinnitus has many benefits, including alleviating hearing disorders.
CBD and tinnitus: how does it work?
CBD is derived from the industrial hemp plant (Cannabis Sativa L): it is a compound found in this plant, widely known as cannabis, even though the THC molecule is not associated with CBD. There is a growing body of scientific research into the effects of this natural active ingredient on the human body. Cannabidiol interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and in particular with the CB1 and CB2 receptors which play an important role in the ENT system in relation to hearing and balance. Ringing in the ears is generally linked to overactivity of these receptors in the brain: the use of CBD for tinnitus would regulate this activity, therefore reducing tinnitus.
The benefits of cannabidiol for tinnitus
In addition to the multiple benefits of CBD for tinnitus, psychological symptoms such as stress, insomnia, or depression are also relieved. Cannabidiol regulates the nervous system and promotes the production of serotonin, a happy hormone. Therefore, it provides a feeling of well-being and soothing, which can significantly help to improve sleep and help you relax. In fact, lack of sleep increases stress and hearing disorders, which creates an ongoing vicious circle. Peaceful and restful sleep ensures a higher quality of life. The use of CBD for tinnitus is therefore a great resource for relieving patients’ symptoms and reducing stress, associated with both the cause and impacts of tinnitus.
CBD for tinnitus: what does the science say?
Please note that the sale and consumption of CBD in France is perfectly legal, provided that the product contains less than 0.2% THC. This compound is responsible for the psychotropic effects experienced, the famous "stoned effect". Therefore, numerous clinical trials are underway on this natural hemp compound, and in particular on the effects of CBD for tinnitus. The therapeutic properties of legal cannabis are still being studied, and it is too early to talk about a medicine or treatment. However, the therapeutic potential of CBD is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), and it is believed to be effective in reducing the impact of tinnitus on the lives of those with the condition. Using CBD for tinnitus acts mainly on sleep disorders, stress, and anxiety, especially when takingCBD oil in addition to more conventional medical treatments.
How should you take CBD to relieve tinnitus?
The right product
If you want to take CBD for tinnitus, you should be aware that it is available in many forms. Therefore, you should choose the method of administration that works best for you, both in terms of effect and taste. Inhalation, oral administration and sublingual administration: all these methods of consumption are good and safe for your health. The dosage depends on your sensitivity to CBD, the product you use, and your body type. But don’t worry: you can find all the information about CBD dosage on the labels. If in doubt, start with a fairly low dose and gradually increase. In addition, make sure you choose high-quality hemp to maximise results and improve your health: at The CBD Farm, you will find premium full spectrum CBD for greater efficacy against tinnitus.
3 methods of administration
There are 3 particularly suitable modes of administration to consume CBD for tinnitus:
- Oral administration: you can take CBD in food or drink. To do this, mix CBD oil into your recipes or use CBD flowers in infusions with a touch of vegetable oil to help dissolve the cannabinoids and release their benefits. You can also opt for cannabidiol-based foods such as CBD sweets or CBD chocolate.
- Sublingual administration: place a few drops of cannabidiol oil under your tongue, then wait 30 seconds to 1 minute before swallowing. This is a very beneficial technique as you don’t have to digest anything, which can lead to the enzymes and active ingredients of the hemp extract being broken down. With this method, the cannabinoids are absorbed through the salivary gland and mucous membranes, allowing them to enter the bloodstream directly. The first relaxing and pain-relieving effects are felt in just a few minutes.
- Inhalation: you can also take CBD for tinnitus via inhalation using a vaporiser. You will feel the effects almost immediate as the CBD compound is directly inhaled through the lungs. It will then be carried by the blood. Vaping with a specialised tool does not lead to burning, so there is no health risk.
The use of CBD and tinnitus: is there a risk?
You may see a scientific study which says that CBD may make tinnitus worse in some people. However, this was a clinical trial conducted on animals, not humans. No one who has taken CBD for tinnitus has complained about a worsening of their condition following cannabidiol consumption, on the contrary: patients experienced regulation of the body, a decrease in their anxiety, and better quality sleep. As it’s a substance that regulates the endocannabinoid system, chronic pain and disorders tend to subside, not just for hearing disorders. CBD contributes to your well-being, both psychological and physical.
